Move over Dick Turpin! The Highway Rat has arrived in England’s woodlands

December 1, 2017
The Forestry Commission has launched a series of new activity trails featuring characters from much-loved children’s author and illustrator-duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Wendover Woods, known for its connection to some of England’s most notorious highwaymen including Dick Turpin, was chosen as the first of 22 beautiful forest locations to open ‘The Highway Rat’ Activity Trails, with more to follow throughout December and early 2018*.rat in woodsThe new themed trails are being unveiled to coincide with the highly-anticipated BBC One animated Christmas special ‘The Highway Rat’, which will feature an all-star cast including David Tennant and Rob Brydon. The story is being brought to life in England’s forests and woodlands by the Forestry Commission, in partnership Magic Light Pictures, and follows the already popular Gruffalo Spotters Trails and Stick Man Trails, inspired by other works from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.  rat with tomatosBridgette Hall, Recreation Manager for Forestry Commission England said:“We are delighted to be partnering once again with Magic Light Pictures to re-create the swashbuckling tale for families all over England. We’re ready to ‘stand and deliver’ a great day out and can’t wait to welcome the first families to our latest trails.

“England’s forests are the perfect place for adventure, and the new Highway Rat Activity Trails will provide even more excitement for children as they explore all that our woodlands have to offer.”

‘The Highway Rat’ Activity Trails will take visitors to 22 selected Forestry Commission sites on a fun woodland journey where they can enjoy spotting characters from ‘The Highway Rat’, taking a ‘wanted poster’ selfie and learning about the great outdoors – all free of charge.

Families can buy an exclusive highway pack featuring a Highway Rat mask and a series of additional activities to complete along the trail for just £3.00.
